A rehashed and reversed story of ‘Pokiri’

Puri Jagannath is good at making action-packed dramas and his film ‘Pokiri’ with a undercover cop’s story remained a blockbuster during those days. It rewrote the records of the Telugu film industry once. Now, again he came up with a police subject, of course, a reverse of ‘Pokiri’ story. The gangster turning into police officer to a police officer turns a gangster. However, the director claimed that he had prepared a subject with an inspiration from the real life story of an encounter specialist Dayanayak of Mumbai

Gangaram (Gopichand), who is an orphan, had a wish to become a police officer. He rises to the level of a police sub-inspector with sheer hard work and decides to eliminate the anti-social elements with his power. After nabbing three of the gangsters belonging to a local mafia gang, the DGP (Nazar) tells him to shoot them dead and he follows those instructions. He gets a promotion as an encounter speciality and the DGP gives him a list of gangsters of a mafia gang and tells him to kill them mercilessly with the help of four other police officers. Gangaram became infamous with encounters and kills the gangsters ruthlessly. After killing the leader of one of the two mafia gangs which had become a thorn in armpit for the police, Gangaram appeals to give him permission to kill the other mafia don (Kelly Dorge) who was staying in Malaysia. Citing that rules won’t permit them to eliminate a mafia leader outside the country, the DGP tells him to resign and do it at his own risk and get back to India. If he could return successfully, he would not forward the resignation to higher officials. Otherwise, they could claim that Gangaram went on his own and died in the hands of the mafia gang abroad. With no second thought, Gangaram resigns his job. Soon, Gangaram gets implicated in a corruption case and the police arrest him. Then Gangaram learns that the DGP is a pawn in the hands of that mafia don and made him to wipe off his opponents. The commissioner of police goes a step ahead and try to kill Gangaram in an encounter but the latter escapes. Whether Gangaram was able to kill the mafia don in Malaysia? What kind of action he had taken to teach a lesson to the commissioner who tried to kill him in encounter and the DGP who implicated him in a false case? Whether his ambition to eliminate gangsters as a police officer was fulfilled or not? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax.

PLUS

The performance of Gopichand as a police officer is the highlight of the film. He flexed his muscles as an upright police officer and the character had suited him perfectly. The subject was proved to be a tailor-made story for the hero and his facial expressions, body language and histrionics are awesome to watch on the screen. He showed a matured performance in the film. Another highlight of the film is the screenplay by Puri Jagannath. The tight-knit screenplay made the audiences sit tight in their seats with very less boring scenes. The selection of artistes is quite perfect and there are no waste character as every character has its own identity and distinction. Another plus point in the film is the excellent cinematography by Shyam K Naidu. He was able to capture the beauties of the foreign locales and the action scenes. The colours, shades and the lighting which he chose to use suited the mindset of the director. The choreography of action scenes are also quite natural and not flimsy. The director maintained perfect tempo right from the beginning till the end. He proved that he could make action flicks with a different taste and style of his own.

MINUS

There are only a few minus points in the film here and there. The heroine, who hates men, falling in love with a police officer after he gained name as an encounter specialist is something cinematic. Unlike ‘Pokiri’, where the heroine had got enough footage, Priyamani failed to get adequate importance in this film. The director tried to use her bikini glamour in a romantic song in the second half. But for the filling of glamour slot, the heroine had not great role to play in this action-oriented subject. Music by Chakri is average, but for a couple of numbers, the tunes of the songs are just average. Even the choreography of songs was not that great. The climax is absurd, as no sincere police officer wants another dedicated police to remain a gangster. But for these lapses, the film is okay as a whole.

REMARKS

All the artistes in the film did justice to their respective roles and especially, Roja’s decision to come back to films is worthy as the film would give her the expected break. Nazar, Kelly Dorge and others gave their best for the film. The dialogues which need the punch were perfect from the pen of Puri Jagannath. Production values of Bellamkonda Suresh is worthy. The film would definitely attract the mass and young audiences and that would be enough for the Box Office to ring loud.
