A triangular love story with a message
Tanish, who played different roles as a child artiste, got promotion as hero with ‘Nachavule’. It is just an okay film and was able to achieve above average talk. His second film ‘Ride’ gave him an opportunity to prove himself as an artiste, though is not a film with himself as a solo hero. Based on his performance in the earlier two films, Sanam Naga Ashok Kumar and NV Prasad chose him as their hero for ‘Mauna Ragam’ where he romanced with two heroines including Madhurima and Suhasini. The banner brought out several hit films and Vijay Balaji made his debut as director through this prestigious banner and moulded a film based on a typical situation involving the love and tried to define the word in his own terms.
Chandu (Tanish) is a boy who happened to be from a middle class family but with a noble heart. He struggles a lot so that his childhood friend Kaveri (Suhasini) leads a comfortable living. He also had plans to marry her and the latter too express a similar feeling. However, Sandhya (Madhurima), who is a common friend of them, also develops love towards Chandu. There is one such situation, where Chandu was caught in a situation where both Sandhya and Chandhu had to live under one roof. Chandu plans to become a singer, but his life takes a ‘U’ turn with his dreams get shattered. How does Chandu face these problems? Will he choose his childhood sweetheart or the new ray of hope in his life? How Chandu faced the situation? Who won the heart of Chandu? What happened to the love of Kaveri? What was the answer to Sandhya as she expressed her love towards Chandu? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax. The director was able to run the entire story with just six characters and brought the film out as a comedy entertainer with a social message that one should not neglect his studies and spoil his career in the name of love.
PERFORMANCE
Tanish improved his acting capabilities considerably. However, he still had to shun the rigidity in his body language as he is not new to the camera. He should also improve his dialogue modulation, especially in sentiment and romantic scenes. Though he showed somewhat good ease in dances, he still have to improve a lot to withstand the competition from many upcoming heroes. He should also avoid imitating the seniors and should prove his own capability. Suhasini is okay in her role. Especially, she is good in traditional wardrobe and she did justice to her role. Madhurima, who is playing heroine for the second time, filled the glamour slot. She did a bubbly college girl character and she got a good scope to show chivalrousness in her acting. There’s hardly any chemistry between Tanish and Madhurima. It’s not clear if they are in love and the fact that both of them are hell bent in help each other restricts their relationship to only being good friends. Other artistes including Jeeva, AVS and others did justice to their roles, while MS Narayana, Ali, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam and others tickled the funny bones of audiences at satisfactory levels. Ramaprabha proved her seniority as actress and did a decent job.
TECHNICAL
As far as behind the screen, SA Rajkumar’s music is just okay, but failed to provide adequate rhythm in re-recording. The background score failed to elevate the mood in some of the scenes. It is not known why Rajkumar, who scored fantastic music for the films in his early days of his career, is giving such a casual music after gaining experience as music director. Camera by Saman Mitru is good and especially he was able to capture the beauty of the rural and urban backdrops with equal ease with his camera eye. Editing by Gauthamraju is adequate and though he ignored to use his scissors to cut some lengthy scenes, the audiences could bear them as some such stretched scenes helped to maintain the pace of the film. Director Vijay Balaji made a good attempt to explain the theme of love and tried to give a novel definition. He did his best to explain the difference between the words love, attraction and friendship in his own way. However, the present generation youth, may not digest some of the scenes and may get a feel of boring to understand the message. The production values of Sri Saideva Productions are okay. Though the film had no great artistes with image, the producers’ experiment with the director appeared to be okay.
REMARKS
The film unveiled delicate emotions in love. At the same time movie had good sentiment and comedy and director Vijay Balaji tried to mould the family relations and made an effort to reflect his ideas about the greatness of love on the screen. Director Vijay Balaji takes a lot of time to establish the conflict point in the film. The second half of the film appeared a little more stretched as the director deviated from the main storyline. The climax of the film is a big let down because of its melodramatic nature.
