Movie Review
Balu (Manoj) reaches Hyderabad from Bhadrachalam with an aim to become a big playback singer like SP Balasubrahmanyam. He stays in a colony opposite Captain Rao’s (Mohanbabu) house. Rao is of the opinion that the present generation youth has no specific target to achieve and just pass time. Once Rao’s friend’s (Suman) daughter Sravya (Tapsee) visits India from the US, with an aim to prepare a documentary on traditional and folk songs in Telugu and to submit a thesis for her PhD on it. She listens to Balu’s song and seeks his help to be her music guide. Balu who lost his heart to Sravya agrees to it and helps her. Balu gets a chance to take part in a music competition organised by Gemini Music channel. However, he needs money to practice with instruments and to compose music. Captain Rao agrees to pay Rs 5 lakh and with the help of Balu, Sravya starts her project. During the selections, Balu’s group didn’t get a chance and Balu finds it was Rao, who obstructed like a wall in fulfilling his dream. Rao sets a condition to choose between love and music and Balu chooses music. He gets a chance to take part in the competition. As per the condition, Balu pretends that he refuses Shravya that he did not love her. But, he had thoughts to convince Rao and make him to accept their love. When asked by his friends, Balu reveals the flashback saying that he had challenged a local leader Bullabbai (Ahuti Prasad) that he would become a big singer and then only return to his village. It was not only his dream to become a singer but also the wish of his parents (Tanikella Bharani and Sudha). So, his first priority would be music. Balu reaches the finals and Bullabbai was desperate to prevent him from becoming a singer. He calls up Sravya’s father that his daughter was in love with a flower-vendor’s son. So, Sravya’s father comes to India and insults Balu’s parents. In the climax, the hero wins the contest with a patriotic song and everyone appreciate him. The film ends on a happy note with the union of Sravya and Balu.
PERFORMANCE:
Manoj improved a lot and showed a good performance all through the film. The best part is that he had a good knowledge on dialogue delivery. At the same time, he improved a lot in showing good emotions for varied scenes. His comedy timing was perfect. He showed good ease in dances and fights. Tapsee, though a newcomer, played well. She has a stunning beauty and that could be the reason for her selection by the director. Moreover, she got a fantastic opportunity, as the director is an expert in showing the heroine in a most beautiful manner. She too did not show any inhibition to display her beauties. Even before the release of her debut film, she signed three films, which proves how the director made the people in the film industry to recognize her. In fact, the character played by Mohanbabu, did not suit him at all. But one had to satisfy that he accepted that role because the film was produced by his daughter and the hero is his son. Other artistes including Tanikella Bharani, Ahuti Prasad, Suman, Sudha, Pragati, Aiswarya did justice to their respective roles. Brahmanandam and MS Narayana tried their best to tickle the funny bones and succeeded to some extent.
TECHNICAL:
Music by MM Keeravani is extraordinary. All the songs were quite melodious. The audio was a big hit even before the release of the film. Moreover, the picturisation of the songs was extraordinary as director is an expert in it. Rerecording was also done with precision. Dialogues by Sasi Rajasimha are good in parts. Especially, dialogues in the combination scenes of Mohanbabu and Manoj were written in a fantastic manner. Screenplay by BVS Ravi is okay and Gopal Reddy showed his prowess in portraying the beauty of the heroine in a fabulous way. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is good in parts. The first half is okay, but in the second half, the scenes immediately after the interval bang and in the climax would have been further crisp, had Marthand shown some more interest in his profession. Director Raghavendra Rao followed his own traditional direction and those who are watching the film would get a feel of watching a movie in 80s and 90s. The present generation youth may not like the picturisation or movement of the story. As a whole the film looks very interesting.
REMARKS:
Those who are interested in good family subjects and who were in the age group of 30-50 would definitely say the film was a big hit, but for the teenagers, it appears a boring film. The director chose double meaning dialogues, elevation of sex appeal of the heroines, use of coconuts in the picturisation of songs would bring laughs among the audiences. Watch the film as a routine commercial entertainer, but the climax was very pale and the director should keep in mind the present generation of youth who like songs with fast beat. However, the theme of the film is to highlight the traditional music, one had to adjust with the slow songs, thanks to Keeravani for giving melodious tunes.
